Question
Reportability--Heme & Lymphoid Neoplasms: If a patient has a diagnosis of 'thrombocytosis' or 'thrombocythemia,' it is NOT reportable unless it states 'essential or malignant' -- Correct?

I've recently been assigned to do all hematopoetic cases for my hospital system and I want to be sure this is correct. We see a lot of 'thrombocythemia' but I don't often see any stated as 'essential thrombocythemia.'

Answer
The terms "thrombocytosis" and "thrombocythemia" by themselves are not reportable.

See the alternate names for code 9962/3 in the Hematopoietic database.
