For cases diagnosed 2010 and forward, access the Hematopoietic Database at http://seer.cancer.gov/seertools/hemelymph.
Idiopathic thrombocytic purpura (ITP) is not a synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia (RT). ITP is not a reportable disease. See Appendix F.
Under the Alternate Names section in the Heme DB, the only synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia is "RT." ITP is not listed as a synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia.

For cases diagnosed 2010-2011, access the Hematopoietic Database at
http://seer.cancer.gov/tools/heme/.
Click on Hematopoietic Project. Click on Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Database. For 2010-2011 diagnoses, click on the "use the 2010 database" label in the upper right corner of the screen. The 2010 Hematopoietic Coding Manual (PDF) button will appear to indicate the correct version of the program is available now for query.
Idiopathic thrombocytic purpura (ITP) is not a synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia (RT). ITP is not a reportable disease. The steps used to arrive at this decision are:
Enter in the Heme DB to determine if this has a reportable histology. Click on the SEARCH button. No results for all terms are returned, there is no reportable histology in the Heme DB for ITP.
Enter in the Heme DB to determine whether ITP is a synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia. Click on the SEARCH button. Ensure that the term "refractory thrombocytopenia" [9992/3] is highlighted on the screen.
Scroll down to the ALTERNATIVE NAMES section. The only alternative name for refractory thrombocytopenia is "RT." ITP is not listed as a synonym for refractory thrombocytopenia.
The statement that the disease is resistant to steroids simply means that the ITP is not responding to treatment (steroids are used to treat ITP).
